Theatre of a Lifetime

the actor stood anchored
and tall on the stage
his voice rang out over the crowd

he recited his words
as if sprung from his heart
lovingly, powerful, proud

he had lived a long life
always wearing his masks
he had mastered the art to conceal

and the people were blind
to the pain in his heart
but he swore he would not let them feel

as he spoke his last words
and the roar of the crowd
took him higher than ever before

he took his brief bow
saw the plush curtain fall
this last time, there would be no encore

and he fell to his knees
for the pain in his chest
had reached levels he had never known

tired eyes closed at last
and he smiled to himself
it was his time to pass on the throne.
