her frail hand in his
he held her in her sleep
as he had so many a night
her beautiful face
that he’d known all his life
touched softly, made him smile with delight
she stirred in his arms
and he stroked her long hair
he asked of her to stay asleep
for he could not be certain
if she’d recognize him
once she woke, she would not see him weep
for so many years
they had stood side by side
and had fought through the challenge of life
but the woman he knew
had grown tired at last
his heartbeat, his soulmate, his wife
so he stayed by her side
held her tight in his arms
for he knew the last curtain was near
and he felt her relax
as she walked the last walk
and he kissed her goodbye with a tear
